Side Saddle

Side saddle riding is a form of equestrianism that uses a type of saddle which allows a rider (usually female) to sit aside rather than astride a horse. Sitting aside dates back to antiquity and was developed in European countries in the Middle Ages as a way for women in skirts to ride a horse in a ‘modest’ fashion whilst also wearing fine clothing. It has retained a specialty equestrian niche, even in the modern world.

Correct posture is essential for balance and security in a side saddle and only one stirrup is used, which you will learn in the class, which is taught by our experienced side saddle instructor (who is registered with the Side Saddle Association). The horses we use at the Riding School for side saddle classes have been given additional training and are accustomed to the different feel of the side saddle. They are versatile for riding both side saddle and astride.

At the Riding School, we offer introductory lessons and ½ hour side saddle, for both adults and children. As well as riding, you will also learn about fitting a side saddle and turnout. You will soon be poised and elegant and eager to learn more!
